The Image Maker by Gay Marks

Southwest history lies close to the surface.  It's not uncommon for a hiker or horseman to discover an image created on a rock outcrop by a native person, as long as a thousand years ago.  Often they are crude depictions of the people and animals of the time, or simply interesting geometric patterns.  The ancient graffiti is called a petroglyph if it was carved in the rock surface, a pictograph if it was swabbed on with paint or a pigment made of local materials.

Here is my notion of what a pictographer of the time may have looked like.  The bronze sculpture is 15" tall, 17" wide.
